Obesity Canada Mentorship Program

The Obesity Canada Mentorship Program is an exciting initiative designed to bridge the gap between the future generation of obesity medicine physicians and leading experts in the field. This 12-month program will focus on knowledge translation and facilitation of valuable networking opportunities for healthcare professionals within their first few years of practice. It will provide in-depth training regarding comprehensive care for patients living with obesity to drive positive change within clinical practice.

Please complete the application form with as much detail as possible. Applications will be reviewed by Obesity Canada , with a focus on national representation, diversity, and a demonstration of commitment to obesity medicine. Only 15 mentees will be accepted.

The deadline to apply is March 31, 2025.

Decision letters will be sent to applicants on or before April 7, 2025.

Criteria for Participation

  • Medical Doctor 
  • Canadian Physician
  • Current practice intersects with obesity management
  • Letter of Interest
  • Commitment to attending all meetings (in-person and virtual)
  • Participating in Calibre and all its sessions in December 2024
  • Attending the National Clinical Obesity Update in March 2025

Outline of Program

Virtual Monthly Meetings

These meetings will be held virtually for 1-hour over Zoom for participants to connect with their mentors and other mentees. Meeting times will be dedicated to reviewing case studies, questions & discussion, and collaborating with one another.

Calibre Training

Included in the mentorship program, all mentees will be enrolled and participate in the Calibre training program, cohort 9. This condensed training will run over 5-weeks covering topics from the pathophysiology and the determinants of obesity to weight bias & stigma, to evidence-informed treatments and collaborative care plans, reassessing and adjusting treatments. This is an accredited training program which will require approximately 22 hours to complete. All of the live sessions are mandatory to attend.

One-Day In-Person Workshop

Also included in the mentorship program, Obesity Canada will be hosting a 1-day in-person workshop for the mentees to engage with the mentors in a collaborative, safe environment. Obesity Canada will be covering the costs of airfare and one night accommodation will be covered.

Meet the Mentors

Dr. Tasneem Sajwani is the Medical Director at the Edmonton Weight Management Centre. With a certification from the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) and being a Fellow of the College of Family Physicians, Dr. Sajwani is dedicated to advancing obesity care and family medicine. Her leadership and expertise continue to drive impactful change in the field of weight management and primary care.

Dr. Sean Wharton has his doctorate in Pharmacy and Medicine at the University of Toronto.  He is the medical director of the Wharton Medical Clinic, a community based internal medicine weight management and diabetes clinic.  He is an assistant professor at the University of Toronto and adjunct professor at McMaster University in Hamilton and York University in Toronto.   He is the lead authour of the 2020 Canadian Obesity Guidelines and has published many peer-reviewed articles in international medical journals.
